DLG – HomeBASE Hosting Service

Spread the love

John De Lorenzo's HomeBASE
Ready, when you are .. I hope

Setup and testing our own WordPress Websites and FileMaker Server for us, our students and our clients. It’s only just begun, but we will have all of our setup and testing done by June 1, 2017 (well ahead of our Fall ’17 HomeBASE University grand opening).

Our Hosting Service includes 4 elements:

  • WordPress: This includes an individual website for each person so as to enable them to develop their site. Each site will contain the domain name http://dlghomebaseserver.com/YOUR NAME GOES HERE  (Click on the link to access it now).
  • FileMaker 15 Hosting Service: to provide online access to individual and class projects and libraries. Checkout our sample library, using logon: “Visitor“Password: “HomeBASE” We’ll have a total of 8 database applications to accommodate 16 simultaneous online users.
  • Webinars (for our HomeBASE University): Our course materials, which are being prepared now as well as the related webinars, will be hosted here (at this site, when available). We’ll be adding another item to our main menu as well as posting our announcements. Click on the link for a sample used in teaching the FileMaker tool.
  • Dropbox for students and clients to access applications, et al for their purposes .. as well as ours.

Our webinar will be focused more on the Project Planning as well as the development of individual and team projects. Our classes include the course, our Bulletin Board for reference and support, and centered around the “Rapid Application Development” approach. Students will be expected to know the products, but be introduced to the tips and tools available, as they actually build sophisticated applications in a stress filled environment.

It became abundantly clear that it’s just a better idea to host our own server (MAMP PRO for our collective needs). This eliminates the need to find, setup and maintain websites as well as to support our Web Database Application development and support. That phase will evolve if and when the need arises.

So, this becomes a welcome addition to our menu of products and services for us, our students and client project work .. eliminating the need and headaches for finding/using their own resources.

Now, time for cooking, photography, music and family

First, MAMP Pro allows us the flexibility to accommodate varied needs of various user needs. Second, it just makes dollar sense, i.e. doing setup, installs and support becomes easy. Third, it eliminates the cost for each and every student and customer to incur any additional costs or trouble of dealing with all the administrative headaches. Forth, users can limit there own domain expenses to buying a domain name, which is very inexpensive or just use our ip address/YOUR NAME GOES HERE!

Our fee for this service, beyond our student training and client development projects will be $100/month (Prepaid Annually).

Frankly, we’re NOT really looking to develop this as a regular line of business. We can easily accommodate our needs, our students, and our clients. However, if and when this segment grows so to will our time, effort and expense.

I, too, have seen the time, effort and expense of using 3rd party for hosting websites and database applications. Unfortunately, there really is no practical “one stop show” that can provide all of what we’re about for anywhere near my price.

Other side benefits of our projects and running on our servers, include the expense of many services we pay for as developers .. Plugins, Webinars, etc.

Frankly, we need this especially for us, our students, and our clients .. it’s just not practical for anyone without this setup to get going without lots of unnecessary time, effort and money.

The future of this service is expandable, should it catch on. For the time being we are limiting our load without having to expand our servers and the workload. Time will tell, eh?

Thanks for considering us,

John
